Why should we work? Are we doing it right, so far?

We study, get some job and work for life. It is what most of us do it. Is this the right way of doing it?

Are we on the right track?

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

I cherish this beautiful sentence by Steve Jobs.

A few days ago, my wife reminded me of the long-pending garden work. No second thought, I immediately hired Mr Subbaiah, a gardener who works in the park near our house. I see him talking to the flowers and trees during my daily walk. First, I laughed at him, later I realised how important it is to communicate with the one you love. He loves every plant in that garden and cares for it.

He understands the trick and knows when to prune what. He handles plants and trees like how a father treats his son with love and care. I do not have any other choice than Mr Subbaiah to clean up my small terrace garden.

His love and passion for his work claim more business opportunities for him. And I am ready to pay any amount he asks, as I know the work has been on the right hand.

Let me ask a simple question, Why should we work?

Work – it takes a larger portion of our lives, directly or indirectly

Whether we admit it or not, our job plays a leading role in our life. Who else would pay us the money to live the lifestyles that we live if we do not have our jobs?

Work to find a purpose.

Why do we work? To earn money! Of course. Monetary reward is a necessity. The main reason is to discover our interests and push ourselves to our limits to achieve our ambitions, and finally, it should give us a purpose.

Get noticed and boost pay packet.

There is an old saying, Do what you love, and the money will follow. If we learn to love our jobs, we are more likely to win. Be positive at work, and our job will pay off.

Healthy relationship

Work not only shows good bank balance, but it also gives a better mental and physical health. If we are passionate about what we do, it motivates our colleagues to succeed, resulting in a very healthy work environment.

Feel Good and pass on the energy

100% Achievement from a work we love improves our self-esteem, and the energy we gain spills over where ever we are. Those who love their jobs will have a very happy life cycle, even in the automated tech jungle.

I visited a consumer-durable shop and interacted with the customer service manager Dextor about my washer service. He listened to me 100% and understood the problem. He quickly checked his system, called a technician and checked his availability and assigned my job to him immediately. He also called his service team and asked them to release the job order for my work. He shared the technician contact details and confirmed to me that the work should get solved before evening.

I felt happy and satisfied. While leaving, I just asked, how is your job?. Instantly he replied, It is great! I like interacting with people. I enjoy being a problem solver. My work is valued here, and I am appreciated and feel happy here. His answer reminded ‘Love it or leave it’.

In both of the above situations, I like their passion for their work. They love their job and understand all the nature of their work. Like Mr Subbaiah and Mr Dextor, we come across many people who love their work. When you start interacting with a person, you can easily judge whether they love their job or just doing it for the sake of doing their duty.

It is essential to enjoy what you do or do what you love the most.

I would end this article with a very famous quote.

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

– Steve Jobs

Love your work or work what you love!
